Photography has the power to capture moments, tell stories, and connect people across cultures. Few student-run photography societies in Asia can claim a history as rich and inspiring as the Jadavpur University Photographic Club (JUPC). Founded in 1964, JUPC has grown from a modest darkroom in a geology department washroom into a respected institution that nurtures photographers and celebrates Asian photography and photography from around the globe. As someone who appreciates the craft and community of photography, I want to share the journey of JUPC and why it remains a beacon for photographers today.

Humble Beginnings and Founding Vision

The story of JUPC begins in 1963 when Prof. Robin Wood, a faculty member from Cambridge on a Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) assignment, collaborated with students at Jadavpur University. They set up a darkroom in the Geology Department’s washroom, a small but crucial space where photography enthusiasts could develop their film and learn the craft. This initiative quickly gained momentum, and by 1964, the club was formally established.

This early phase was marked by a strong emphasis on traditional film photography techniques. The club’s founders understood the importance of hands-on training and community support, values that continue to define JUPC. The club was not just about taking pictures; it was about building skills, sharing knowledge, and fostering a passion for visual storytelling.

Growth into a Visual Arts Hub

Over the past six decades, JUPC has expanded far beyond its original setting. The club now occupies a dedicated space within Jadavpur University, complete with a studio, a well-stocked library, and modern darkroom facilities. This growth reflects the club’s commitment to providing resources that support both beginners and advanced photographers.

JUPC’s development mirrors the evolution of photography itself. While it started with film, the club has embraced digital photography and new techniques, creating a bridge between traditional and modern practices. This blend allows members to explore a wide range of styles and methods, enriching their creative expression.

Training and Workshops

One of the pillars of JUPC’s success is its focus on education. The club regularly organizes workshops and training sessions that cover various aspects of photography, from basic camera handling to advanced editing and printing techniques. These sessions are open to students and amateur photographers, making JUPC a welcoming space for anyone eager to learn.

The club’s training programs often feature guest speakers and professional photographers from across Asia, providing members with exposure to diverse perspectives and styles. This emphasis on learning helps maintain high standards and keeps the community engaged with the latest trends in Asian photography.

Montage: The Annual Flagship Event

A highlight of JUPC’s calendar is Montage, the club’s bi-annual photography competition and exhibition. Montage has grown into a prestigious event that attracts entries from across India and other Asian countries and from all over the world. It showcases a wide variety of photographic genres, including portraiture, landscape, documentary, and experimental photography.

Montage is more than a competition; it is a celebration of creativity and cultural exchange. The exhibition offers members and visitors a chance to experience the depth and diversity of Photography. It also provides emerging photographers with a platform to gain recognition and connect with peers.

Documenting Campus Life and Legacy

For over 60 years, JUPC has played an active role in documenting the life of Jadavpur University. The club has covered countless events, including convocation ceremonies, cultural festivals, and academic milestones. These photographs form a visual archive that captures the university’s history and spirit.

The club’s legacy extends beyond its archives. With more than 400 past members and over 50 active members today, JUPC continues to be a vibrant community. It connects students, professionals, and travelers who share a passion for photography and Asian culture. This network supports collaboration, mentorship, and lifelong friendships.
